Federico Morini
Federico Morini, nicknamed “Fast Fred” during his time as a professional cyclist, was born July 29 ,1976 in Cittā di Castello (Umbria). Federico’s older brother, Francesco, was also a professional cyclist during the reign of Marco Pantani.
At the age of seven, Federico entered his first cycling race. At such a young age, he could not have envisioned how important cycling would become, and how an amusing childhood activity would encompass his adult life. With Federico’s racing debut in 1982 on the Ciclo Sport Selci team, he quickly became an ambitious competitor in the youth category.
The passion Federico possessed, and the ability to master the technical aspects of the sport, resulted in his rapid promotion to higher and more difficult categories. Federico quickly moved to the amateur levels where he raced with a well-established team in Tuscany and became one of the best amateur racers in the region, with dreams of becoming Italian National Champion. Cycling became not only a regimented sport for Federico, but an institution, where he cultivated such traits as, ambition, determination, honor, sacrifice, objectivity, and grace.
He successfully raced for Team Brunero – a professional development team for the famous Mapei squad with Johan Museew. He then made the transition to a professional cyclist, and in 2000, Federico signed with the German Gerolsteiner cycling team. During his first year as a professional he earned many important placings including 1st during stage 3 of the Tour of Austria. It was an important win, making Federico a highly prized asset among some of the most prestigious teams in cycling.
Federico seemed to have full command of his career, but in December 2001, a horrific training accident would alter that path and change his life for forever. Federico’s accident claimed his professional cycling career, but opened the door to other possibilities in the sport such as race organizer, television and radio appearances, host to those visiting the three Grand Tours (Giro d’Italia, Tour de France, and Vuelta a Espaņa), Public Relations Officer for Davide Rebellin. Most importantly, the knowledge and positive attributes he gained from cycling were incorporated into Federico’s own life, which he now shares with cyclists of all abilities during various training camps throughout the year.
